Earth Day movement to save our planet from ourselves. There is no do-over if we screw up the only planet we have. Inspired by a massive oil spill in 1969, Gaylord Nelson a Wisconsin USA senator with the help of Congressman Pete McCloskey organized a teach-in on campuses nationally to highlight the need for environmental activism. 22 April was chosen as the annual Earth Day for maximum student participation because it is a weekday between Spring Break and final exams.

In 1990, the Earth Day movement went global involving 200 million people in 141 countries, which led to the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Brazil. Earth Day 2000 used the power of the internet to push awareness of global warming etc, involving 5,000 environmental groups in 184 countries. By 2010 Earth Day now involves more than One Billion people in 193 countries. The 2021 theme for Earth Day is "Restore Our Earth". In British Columbia, you can find opportunities to contribute on your local city website and on Provincial websites such as www.clearairbc.ca There are many easy ways you too can make a difference including recycling or using less water or using environmentally friendly products, and more.
